Virtual Storage Technology (VST)
Virtual Storage Technology - VST includes a comprehensive family of virtualized storage software featuring storage management, high performance virtualized RAID adapter and port virtualization for Intel and AMD compatible servers, workstation, desktop and laptops. VST runs on existing systems using built in motherboard SATA ports or enhanced chipsets offering SAS disk or expansion capability. Further, when used in conjunction with a compatible disk host bus adapter card, VST can seamlessly create arrays that span both hardware cards and motherboard chipsets, radically improving performance and storage density, while decreasing system cost and adding flexibility.
Supporting features found only in high cost RAID adapters and enterprise RAID stacks, VST layers storage virtualization above the physical I/O ports, be them built into the motherboard or on an add-in card, even external disk arrays to create independence from the hardware. Multiple virtual RAID arrays can be built from any available space on available disk drives, no matter the capacity or type (SATA or SAS) of drives detected by VST. For example a large single 10 drive RAID 5 array could be created using an Intel compatible motherboard’s 6 built in SATA ports and a 4 port SAS/SATA adapter card with only a single drive required for parity to protect the drives on both controllers.
VST provides a common interface regardless of the computer’s CPU type or RAID compatible motherboard, dramatically simplifying support of and compatibility issues between PCs. For example, an Intel ICH9R or AMD 750 based PC motherboard (no RAID adapter necessary) can now both support an identical RAID stack and management interface.
Key Features
- Eliminate expensive RAID add-in cards and use available motherboards
- Break free of your fixed port RAID adapter solution without compromising performance:
- Create one large VST RAID adapter using all available motherboard, add-in card and external JBOD or PCI express expansion chassis disk I/O ports
- Up to 80% lower power consumption that other mainstream enterprise class RAID adapters, making VST idea for low power or green applications
- Hide and split arrays to create instant snapshot or secure storage locations.
- Mix and match different drive sizes and utilize 100% of available capacity
- Advanced RAID redundancy algorithms and caching that achieve near RAID 0 write performance
- Create up to 8 different RAID arrays on the same of different disk drives and types, up to a 32 disk drives in total
